The nine months journey of pregnancy is no less than a roller coaster ride for every mom-to-be. From tears of joy to the fear of getting a miscarriage, a woman experiences extreme of everything during her pregnancy. Not just emotional, there are many physical discomforts caused in the body due to hormonal changes induced by pregnancy.

Lower back pain

What causes back pain?

Your uterus expands during your pregnancy and carrying those extra pounds throws your body off balance. The change in posture due to extra weight can cause strain on your back. The ab muscles that support your back get challenged by the weight of the baby. All this results in back pain during pregnancy.

Ways to prevent back pain

- You can apply heat in the form of heat pad, hot towel or hot water bottle. You can also soak yourself in a hot tub to soothe the muscles.
- Keep a check on your weight. Try to gain only between 12 kilos – 16 kilos, as recommended by experts and doctors.
- Put away all the heels and very flat shoes away for nine months. Look for comfy shoes with good arch support. Also, get rid of your flip-flops, they are terrible for support and are even worse than high heels, say experts.

More tips for preventing back pain during pregnancy

- Do not lift anything heavy. But if you have to life toddlers or packages, use the correct form – squat when you bend your knees, keep your back straight and lift with your arms.
- Make it a point to sit on chairs that have a good back supports such as a firm cushion. If you don't have such chair, then you can place a small pillow or a rolled towel behind your lower back. Also, whenever you can, elevate your feet on a stool or a bench.
