Superfoods in 2020

Food has always been the talk of the town and why should it be any different in 2020? While there has been a constant shift in our eating styles depending upon our lifestyles, healthy food has been one persistent change that most of us have been trying to incorporate. While most of us end up getting back to our warm bowl of noodles, it is always interesting to know what the health industry is going to binge on the coming year. Is kale is going to still be the most beneficial superfood or something new would take over? Is what you are eating is actually really healthy or are their new ingredients in the market that are healthier and taste better than our your regulars? Here is a list of 11 superfoods that are all set to be the highlight of every healthy food conversation in 2020:

01/ Seeds

Thanks to the very famous Keto diet, seeds have proven to be one of the healthiest “snacks” to binge on. Starting from Chia to pumpkin to sesame, seeds have made their debut in all of our fancy salads and smoothies in the past year and looks like they are not backing out from the superfoods list just yet.

02/ Avocado

Do we even need to say anything anymore? The buttery, light creaminess of the avocados speaks for itself. Avocados are not just an absolute delight to our tastebuds but also to our health. They contain 20 different kinds of essential vitamins and are known to be a vital source of unsaturated fats, Vitamin E and B and fibre. So, a cosy Avocado toast every morning doesn’t seem to get old in 2020.

03/ Turmeric

The use of turmeric is not new to Asian countries like ours but the rest of the world seems to have just found out about the many advantages that turmeric has. First used as medicine, we have incorporated turmeric (Haldi) in our food so well that the food seems incomplete without the warm yellow-ness of turmeric in it. And it’s time that turmeric gained the much-deserved popularity.

04/ Fermented Food

This is what we were talking about when we said that there might be food that you are eating regularly, turns out to be supremely healthy. Indian cuisine is full of fermented foods and beverages like pickles, Murabbas (fermented sweet fruits), Kanji (fermented sour drink) that we not known primarily for their health benefits. But turns out, 2020 is going to be a year full of fermented food as they are known to be great with digestion and are full of healthy probiotic that helps the body’s immune system. Lots of Kombucha, yoghurt and pickle coming your way.

05/ Pulses

‘Junk made healthy’ is going to be the new mantra in 2020. When we say pulses, we talk about how they are going to take over the junk and is going to turn everything healthy. With pasta made out of chickpeas and buckwheat pizza crusts, pulses are definitely going to make it to most restaurants’ healthy food menus.

06/ Adaptogens

AKA non-toxic plants that are known to lower down not just one but many kinds of stresses that our bodies go through which includes physical, chemical or even biological. These herbs and roots have been a part of Indian Ayurveda for many ages and now is the time it makes a comeback in forms of Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Ginseng, etc. these are available in powdered forms and can be added to your everyday food.

07/ Beetroot

Beetroot seems to be the Bill Gates of the richest superfood list. It always makes its way to the top 10. Beets are known to be a great source of fibre, manganese, potassium, Vitamin B9, etc. but the recent studies have shown that beetroot is also great for muscle recovery. The presence of inflammation-fighting antioxidants and nitrates initiate healthy blood flow throughout the body which results in quick muscle recovery and gives the body the ability to exercise more.

08/ Exotic Fruits

Who doesn’t love a little fancy and a whole lot of colour in their food? Agree or not, this might be the exact reason why exotic fruits like Kiwi, Dragon fruit and Grapefruits are going to make it the superfoods list that health freaks are going to sear by in 2020. It has been discovered that these fruits offer just as much fibre and nutrients as your local fruits then why not make your smoothie “Instagram worthy”?

09/ Matcha

Newfound love of tea lovers, Matcha is on the list and it is here to stay. Now, the concept of matcha might not be new to us but the reason it is going to make it to 2020 too is because of its antioxidant properties that lie under its deliciousness. Matcha is known to have less caffeine than coffee and considered more beneficial than our regular green tea as the amount of antioxidants in matcha are 100 times higher.

10/ Microgreens

Have you been also noticing people suddenly decorating every dish with little green leaves with white stems? These are called microgreens and they are mini versions of our already-very-healthy foods like Kale, Spinach, mustard plant, etc. Microgreens provide the same nutrients and also makes your food look pretty. Add a few micros to your tacos, salads, etc and get in the nutrition in style.

11/  MCTs

Not everyone might agree with the regime that a Keto dieter has to follow but we are still thankful for it to enlighten us with knowledge of balancing the micronutrients in our diets. MCTs, AKA Medium-Chain Triglycerides, are a form of healthy fats that are found in coconut oil, palm oil, etc. These fats are digested by our bodies differently than other forms of fats. The body digests these fats quicker than others and converts them into energy right away.
