Experiening the first year blues?

Parenting is beautiful, enriching but in ways, also a rollercoaster ride with no option to get off! While there are dos and don'ts you learn during pregnancy, the same doesn't extend to the post-pregnancy stage. The first few months are full of ups and down with moms left with a brand new baby and a whole new set of weird, unexplainable feelings.

Not just mood swings!

Whether you are a first time mother or doing it for the second time, there are always going to be questions that will leave you befuddled, simply termed as "post-pregnancy mood swings". However, it is much more than that. There’s no limit to what one can experience.

Apart from the jitters and the nerves, there are a lot of feelings, you might not consider normal, but are absolutely okay to feel. We talk about the most commonly experienced blues moms face:

Am I doing it right?

This one applies to the women doing it for the first time around. Yes, being around tiny, squishy little babies can be the most adorable thing on the planet, but it can also get pretty overwhelming and scary. For first time mothers, it can get pretty confusing and daunting to think if they are actually doing it right or not. The worry can get to them.

But, as they say, worried moms turn out to be the greatest moms. Second-guessing your decisions is pretty normal and for both the baby and the new mom, it takes time to adjust to the patterns, habits, and preferences. Just because babies can't show their pleasure, likes and dislikes like full-grown adults, doesn't mean they are objecting to your parenting style. Sooner or later, you will get a hang of it and it will all feel natural.

When is the mom-love supposed to kick in?

A new mom is "naturally" supposed to bond with her baby just the instant they lock eyes. However, it is not supposed to work this way and this tiny little misconception can make a lot of women feel incompetent in the initial months.

Scientifically, it can take days, weeks or months for the mom-love and the bond to settle in. Caring for a baby can be overwhelming and not all women naturally take over to it and that is totally okay. It can also be a sign of postpartum blues, which require care. If not attended to, it can unwhirl a sea of emotions for the parent.

Just because you don't feel natural love for your baby from day 1 doesn't mean you are any less of a parent. Babies and infants are humans too, so, with their personality, it can take a little time to adjust. Feeling all huggy and cuddly is not going to happen every time!

Wanting to never leave the baby!

Motherhood has no definite spectrum. There will be days when you feel like the baby is your entire world. It is not at all uncommon to hear from new moms that they never want to leave their baby! It doesn't matter if you are a stay-at-home mom, or a working parent, for some, the mere thought of looming separation can be traumatic, making you feel like you cannot exist (or think of having a life) without your baby in the picture. This, in turn, also induces mommy guilt, which can be bad for your mental health and stop you from enjoying quality time and rest, which you need.

It is normal at first to feel that you aren't meant to part with your baby and let go of that beautiful little world, where you and your baby's emotions are so in sync. The maternal anxiety will kick in but fret not, it will get easier to deal with after a while. Remember, you are allowed to be kind to yourself and not get absorbed by motherhood in its entirety.

Experiencing sleep envy

Yes, they say parenting is the time which will make you cherish all those hours of sleeping which you didn't care about in the past. However, for mothers, sleep envy kicks in a bad way. If you haven't been able to log in precious hours of shut-eye but find your partner easily able to do so, chances are that you will be bothered or just moody thinking about the mere thought, despite them putting in more or less the equal efforts.

Well, no matter how irritating it is, sleep envy is a real thing and you cannot do anything about it. Yes, you might be jealous of taking on the burden of the major responsibilities, but new moms are actually instilled with the ability to thrive through the sleepless nights because of the different hormones rushing in the body.

Instead of snapping out, consider talking about what is bothering you. Ask around for help, find the support and understand that this jealousy is totally normal and nothing to panic about-and most necessarily, not a thing to fight over!

The bottomline

Hang in there mamas! It is never easy to raise a child and you need all the love and support to get through the days. While there are feelings you have no control over (and are completely natural), what you can actually do is find support from the ones who have been there, and understand your share of struggles. When you start to take care of yourself, you will be in a better position to take care of your infant. So, do not forget yourself along the way!
