Is diet cola actually healthy?


Diet soda or diet cola is a drink of choice for people who want to minimise their sugar or calorie consumption. Every sweet, fizzy beverage has a ‘diet’ version which is sold as ‘sugar-free’. Diet soda contains artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, sucralose, cyclamates, aspartame etc. instead of sugar to add sweetness. These drinks were first introduced in the 1950s for diabetic people but were later marketed to people trying to lower their calorie or sugar intake. Even though diet coke is low on calories and sugar, its impacts on health and weight are questionable.

01/ ​Contrasting Reports on Weight Loss

Since diet coke is lower in calories and does not contain white sugar, it is natural to assume that it can support weight loss. However, several scientific observations have found that consumption of diet soda and artificial sweeteners can lead to risks of metabolic syndrome and obesity. Diet soda can also stimulate hunger hormones, causing an increase in appetite. Although, these findings have not been confirmed in human studies. Many experimental studies actually saw that replacing other sugary beverages with diet coke can result in weight loss. A theory suggests that if a person is gaining weight even after consuming diet soda, it is owing to his/her unhealthy eating habits and not because of the soda.

02/ ​Lacking in Nutritional Value

Diet soda is made of carbonated water, artificial sweeteners, colours, food additives and flavours. Usually, it doesn’t contain more than a few calories and is nutritionally nil. One 345 ml of diet soda can contains no calories, fat, sugar or protein and 40 mg of sodium. This value varies from brand to brand of diet soda. Some brands using stevia leaves might also contain a particular amount of sugar. It is pumped with acids, caffeine and preservatives like potassium benzoate, making diet soda have negligible nutritional value.

03/ ​Impacts Kidney Health

Consumption of diet soda has been associated with a heightened risk of chronic kidney illnesses. A study that evaluated the diet of 15,368 people found that the risk of end-stage kidney condition grew with the number of glasses of diet soda the person consumed each week. Those who drank more had higher chances of developing kidney disease than the others. This is because of large amounts of phosphorus in soda, that puts too much acid load on the kidneys. Another study observed that people drinking diet soda are at a bigger risk of kidney stones when compared to people that consume regular soda.

04/ ​Linked to Heart Disease & Diabetes

Studies have discovered that even one serving of diet soda or artificially sweetened drink per day puts a person at 8 to 13% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Other conflicting studies have noted that diet soda is not linked to diabetes and the associated can be explained by any preexisting health conditions such as obesity. Many observational studies have associated raised risk of heart diseases and high blood pressure with the consumption of diet soda. Most of these studies are observational, hence their findings can be explained in other ways. Proper experimental research is required for concrete determination of the health impacts of diet soda.

05/ ​Causes Premature Delivery & Childhood Obesity

Norweigan and Danish studies conducted on pregnant women found that consumption of diet coke put pregnant women at a heightened risk of premature delivery. However, a smaller study in England could not find any causal links between diet soda and premature delivery. In addition, drinking artificially sweetened beverages has been connected with childhood obesity, causing the baby to be overweight at one year of age. However, these studies are observational and don’t offer an apt explanation of how diet soda impacts delivery and baby’s health. Further research is required to examine the long and short term health risks of consuming diet soda.
