How to promote healthy weight in your kids

We will all have to agree that chubby cheeks and dimpled chin babies look adorable only when they are kids. As they age, the chubbiness or say plumpness turns into a major health concern for them and their parents.

Whether it's for kids or grown-ups, being overweight at any age can be a window to several diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and asthma. Childhood obesity has become a serious health concern especially among the urban population, all because of our lifestyle. Those extra pounds not only take a toll on their physical heath but it also affects their mental well-being. As kids are dependent on their parents or guardians, it is their responsibility to guide them and help them manage their weight and promote healthy lifestyle habits. Here are a few simple steps that can help.

01/ Develop a healthy eating habit

It is necessary to help your kid develop healthy eating habits in childhood. This stays with them even when they grow up. Diet plays a major role when it comes to managing weight. Do not push them very hard, rather make small efforts every day. Fill their plate with vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain products. Limit their sugar intake and encourage them to drink more water.

02/ Motivate them to stay active

As they cannot perform stern exercises at this age, encourage them to stay active. Instead of allowing them to spenditheir evenings in front of the television, ask them to play outdoor games or take a brisk walk with them. Even yoga is good for children.Children between 3 to 5 years should be active throughout the day, while kids between 6 to 17 years should be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day.

03/ Sleep

Sleep is also an important factor which influences your child's weight. Not having adequate amount of sleep in a day will make them eat more than their normal diet. Remember, kids need more sleep than adults. The number of hours varies with age.

04/ Cut down the intake of processed food

Processed foods like chips and chocolates can also contribute to weight gain. Instead of this, offer healthy snacks like fresh fruits, whole-grain cereal, nuts, and yoghurt. Cookies and candies should be an occasional treat, not a daily habit.

05/ Avoid labelling food

Do not label food as good or bad. This makes the kids more tempted by foods that are banned. You should also avoid giving them chocolate and cookies as a reward for eating healthy. Whenever you want them to eat healthy, use affirmative words like carrots are good for the eyes. This will help them understand the importance of eating veggies.
